A combined curatorial and educational initiative, Constellations: Past, Present & Future Directions at the Art Museum of the Americas explores the transnational dimensions of modern and contemporary Latin American art as told through the institutional history and collection of AMA | Art Museum of the Americas. An extension of the exhibition, Constellations: Constructivism, Internationalism, and the Inter-American Avant-Garde (AMA, 2012), the Constellations project highlights AMA’s strengths in Geometric Abstraction with new, supplementary material on works by artists including Carlos Cruz-Diez, Jesús Rafael Soto, and Joaquín Torres-García. With an expanded focus on the dialogues between Geometric Abstraction, Abstract Expressionism, and Neo-Figuration, the Constellations symposium reflects on AMA’s legacy as an incubator of twentieth-century Latin American art and considers its future role in promoting inter-American cultural and artistic exchange.
